About the Project

Introduction

The Caribbean region is a stunningly diverse area encompassing a wide range of islands and mainland territories. From the picturesque islands of Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis Antigua and Barbuda, Saint Lucia, Martinique, Aruba, Saba, St. Barth, Cuba, Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados, to the mainland territories of Belize in Central America and Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, and Venezuela in South America, the Caribbean extends its vibrant reach. This region also includes the Caribbean coasts of Latin American countries like Colombia, Honduras, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Costa Rica. The Caribbean is not only ethnically and racially diverse but also rich in religious traditions. With most of the world's major religions represented in the region, the Caribbean is the true melting pot. However, it is often overlooked or unfairly lumped together with Latin America.

I have long felt the need for a comprehensive reading list and syllabus focused specifically on Caribbean theology and religion. When I pursued my Master of Divinity, the curriculum often merged Caribbean religious studies with general Afro-Religious diaspora classes. Similarly, during my Master of Theological Studies, Caribbean theology was grouped with Latin American theologies and religions. This approach neglects the unique and multifaceted spiritual landscape of the Caribbean, which deserves to be studied independently. The Caribbean is a distinct region, intertwined with but separate from Latin America, and its diverse religious traditions and communities merit focused academic attention.

For nearly a decade, since 2017, I have been planning and aspiring to create this reading list and syllabus. The occasion of Caribbean Literature Day has finally provided the perfect opportunity to realize this project. Academic discourse, theology, religion, and biblical studies should highlight and celebrate the region's spiritual richness and diversity.

I am thrilled to present this reading list and syllabus on Caribbean Literature Day. It is important to me to see the Caribbean's unique religious landscape represented in scholarly discussions. I hope this compilation helps you to learn more about my region and its profound spiritual heritage. Enjoy this journey through the sacred currents of Caribbean spiritual journeys.
